Investors were assessing the impact of a resurgence of COVID-19 infections.
The average daily increase of cases in the United States was over 63,000 in the seven-day period ending Sunday, compared with a seven-day average of around 14,000 daily cases a month ago, according to the latest data compiled by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The country registered over 100,000 daily COVID-19 cases on Friday, the highest record since early February this year.
On Monday, U.S. stocks gave up earlier gains to finish mixed after data showed the nation's manufacturing sector saw slower growth in July.
