"Is the ecological environment good? Birds know best." Nestled in the heart of the Yellow River Delta in Gaoqing County, Zibo City, Shandong Province, a picturesque spectacle unfolds with swans gracefully dancing, egrets soaring in the sky, and sandpipers gathering by the interconnected rivers and lakes. This enchanting region has evolved into a vital habitat for rare avian species like the Sinian Sparrow, the Great Swan, and the Chinese Autumn Duck, earning its reputation as a true paradise for birds.
Spanning 47 kilometers, the majestic Yellow River flows through Gaoqing County, giving rise to several distinct wetland landscapes. The county has made remarkable strides in promoting ecological conservation within the Yellow River Basin, spearheading a range of ecotourism initiatives, notably the Swan Lake Hot Spring International Slow City. Situated in the northeastern region of Gaoqing County, this remarkable destination harmoniously blends with the natural course of the Yellow River. Through diligent efforts in wetland ecological protection, restoration, afforestation, and sand stabilization measures, over 2 million square meters of wetlands have been revitalized, encompassing a sprawling 1.6 million square meters of lush greenery. Additionally, a 20-kilometer greenway has been established, further enhancing the pristine natural ecological environment. With over 80 tree species and a staggering 20,000 trees, Gaoqing County boasts a greening rate exceeding 85% and a perennial negative oxygen ion count surpassing 20,000, creating an idyllic environment promoting physical and mental well-being, aptly earning the moniker of a "natural oxygen bar."
As the sand recedes and the reeds flourish, an array of melodious warblers and birds find solace in this thriving ecosystem. Gaoqing County has established a scientific observation and research station dedicated to biodiversity protection within the Yellow River Wetland, yielding remarkable achievements in safeguarding the region's diverse wildlife. In June 2019, Swan Lake Hot Springs International Slow City proudly earned its official recognition as a member of Cittaslow International, becoming the first international slow city within the Yellow River Basin.
